Knowledge is the Frontier of Tomorrow

Dr. Shoshana Margolin

A Holistic practitioner or consultant - no matter what he specializes in - is a healthcare educator. He serves as a catalyst committed to impart the understanding of health and the healing process to his clients. Actually, the word "doctor" comes from the Latin Docere - to teach. So the REAL doctor is not one who merely displays a diploma or license on his wall - but one who teaches, guides, coaches and cares.

The ancient Chinese classified Medicine into 3 categories:
Low medicine - which deals mainly with palliation of pain and symptomatic relief.
Medium medicine - which is committed to discovering and eliminating the causes of disease. and -
High medicine - which is involved in the prevention of disease by teaching proper lifestyle. This was considered suitable to the more sophisticated segment of the population.

Thus, the loftiest goal of the ideal doctor is to be a good teacher - so that disease can be prevented!

One of my great former teachers, Irving Davidson, used to say:
"There are only two primary diseases in the world: ignorance and indifference; all else stems from these". I agree wholeheartedly.
While we can do little to change indifference - we can do a lot to change ignorance.

What is so special about the truly Holistic approach?

In 26 years of practice I have seen over and over how futile it is to assume a unilateral approach to health restoration. And I am not talking specifically of conventional medicine. People come to me disappointed after being treated by herbalist, acupuncturists nutritionists and homeopaths. True, all these healing arts are non-toxic and non-harmful - but each of these practitioners saw only a narrow spectrum of the whole picture - the one he was trained in. These people were unable to find a practitioner who can look at all angles of a problem simultaneously and to uncover the causes of the problem. I feel sorry that they have to fly in from California, Ohio, Portugal and other far off places. Such service should be available everywhere on the planet to those who are aware enough to want it. That's why I took it upon myself to establish an institute for Holistic studies.

There's a story about a man who walked many miles in the hot desert. He was thirsty, hungry and very tired. He lost all hope of survival... then suddenly he saw an oasis: a beautiful fruit-bearing tree near a running brook. He drank the refreshing water, ate the delicious fruit and rested under the shade of the tree. He was revived and uplifted both physically and spiritually. Before he left to continue on his journey, he expressed gratitude to the Creator for saving his life. Then, just before departing, he turned to the tree and said: "I want to offer my appreciation by giving you a blessing... but what blessing can be meaningful to you?

            - To wish you you plenty of shade-providing leaves? you already have those!

            - To say that luscious fruit will be growing on your branches? they already are!

            - To ask that fresh water will be running at your roots? You have that, too!

If I will say

            - "May you be privileged in saving the lives of people who go through the desert"
            - you are doing that already!

So let me bless you by saying:

MAY ALL YOUR OFFSPRINGS BE JUST LIKE YOU.

I often think of this little story when I witness the great suffering that people go through out of sheer ignorance of the laws of nature. When you are a quarter of a century in practice and see absolute miracles every day - you feel an obligation to teach others who will continue this important work after you are gone. It is too precious to remain in the hands of the few. Perhaps the first Biblical commandment of "Be fruitful and multiply" can be reinterpreted in the context of health and disease to mean that we have to show our gratitude by spreading the word and training others.

Several surveys that were conducted in medical schools revealed - not surprisingly - that the motivation of the majority of students was money. They know that a medical degree is their doorway to riches. The second runner-up was prestige. While there is nothing wrong with desiring a comfortable living, this should be a natural consequence of the service you render to others - not your purpose or motivation! The ultimate goal of naturopathic students is to make a difference in people's lives, to help humanity and to know that your own existence was a contribution to the world! In our Institute, we will implant the spirit of sharing and cooperation - not greed and competition.

The Ten Precepts of Ethical Living

*         *          *

  1. Life is sacred - and thus all people deserve to be treated with reverence.
  2. All humans have a right to pursue physical and emotional wellness in the manner of their choice. Informed Freedom of Choice is a basic tenet.
  3. Laws of Nature (such as nourishment and detoxification, serenity and dynamic action) - are to be respected in both health and disease.
  4. The living organism responds favorably to natural, gentle, non-toxic and non-invasive measures. Therefore, these form the basis of the most effective approaches to health - both diagnostic and therapeutic.
  5. All biological functions are based on vibrations. When vibrations are compatible - health ensues; when vibrations are incompatible - disease and death are the result.
  6. We are composed of fields of energy in layers of increasing density: from spiritual to mental, to emotional, to biochemical, to physical.
  7. Animals, too, have a right to survive. Vivisection is cruel, useless, wasteful and lethal. It should be replaced by a variety of other testing methods, which are available.
  8. This planet is our home and we must treat it in a friendly, non-destructive, non-toxic manner on all levels. Violation of this will result in disease and death to both animals and humans.
  9. Conscious living and mindfulness in all our actions and relationships - will bring harmony and happiness into our lives.
  10. "I care" is a key concept that we need to adopt in all our relationships: to Self, to others and to the environment.

QUALITY COUNTS

When you go shopping for clothes - quality is not critical, because you can always buy another dress - but choosing the best education you can get is absolutely critical for a lifetime career. It will determine your professional satisfaction, your success, your future income and your prestige.

The benefits of studying with us (unmatched anywhere!)
  • Easy schedule... classes are held once a week (so you don't have to give up your job or sacrifice family life).
  • Choice of evening, daytime or Sunday classes (as warranted by registration)

  • The most comprehensive, essence-based program ever designed
  • Modest, affordable tuition.
  • Expert faculty, dedicated to the task.

  • Discount on health books.
  • Special Student Discount on professional Academy seminars.
  • Enrichment program (electives) for extra credits.

  • All classes are videotaped so that you will not miss a single session (regular make-up sessions on video for students who had to miss class)
  • Meet like-minded people... form meaningful friendships; "remote students" are part of    your class - you may count on new friends in some far-away places!
  • Program accreditation through the ANMA (American Naturopathic Medical Assoc.)
  • University degrees to graduates of our program granted by Westbrook University.
  • Clinical sessions with supervised hands-on experience (a private Internship program may become available as an additional option).

This elevates    them from the status of stress-inducers (as in most other schools) to the level of 'triggers for learning'.
  • Career guidance for graduates.

    ABOUT OUR APPROACH:
There is a saying: "If your only tool is a hammer, then every problem looks to you like a nail". How true! Practitioners treat patients only in the discipline that they were trained in.  This may seem "logical" from a classification point of view (the dermatologist treats skin disorders, the cardiologist is an expert in heart problems, the nephrologist specializes in the kidneys etc.) - but the human body does not function on a fragmental basis. The patient is a WHOLE UNIT: BODY, MIND AND SOUL and must be treated as such. Even health-seekers who consult so-called "Holistic" practitioners are subject to "categorization": the acupuncturist will be treating them only with needles - not considering the fact that they may need also nutritional counseling and spinal re-alignment; people who consult a psychologist - will get only "talk therapy" - although they may need Homeopathy and detoxification...they may not even need psychological services!  So who can advise the patient where to go to get the help that he needs? Is the average patient sophisticated enough in the Healing arts to be able to decide appropriately for himself? If he consults a surgeon - will this surgeon tell him: "No, you don't need surgery. Just go on a cleansing program and you'll be fine" NOT IN A MILLION YEARS!  If he goes to an herbalist - will the herbalist say: "It's not herbs that you need, it's sound therapy that is most suitable for you!" NEVER! So people consulting various specialists end up getting the treatment practiced by those practitioners - rather than what they actually need! It is rare to find a practitioner who is truly Holistic... who can relate to the patient as an individual, from many angles simultaneously. This is the kind of practitioner we plan to create. The multi-dimensional approach has proved its worth over the years in case after case, even in the most difficult situations. Such treasure should not remain in the hands of the few. It should be available to sick people everywhere.

    ABOUT LICENSING:
Licensing is a permission issued by the state in which you live which enables you to work in a specific profession that is licensed. If you practice medicine without a license - it is a felony because medicine is a licensed profession. If you are practicing something that is NOT licensed - whether it's shoe repair or lifestyle enhancement - you are not violating any licensing laws. A school cannot issue licenses - but a school CAN issue certificates of completion for actual studies - and that's what we plan to do. Currently there is no licensing for natural healthcare practitioners in NY state or even in NJ - except for chiropractors - and they struggled for over 30 years to become a licensed profession. So licensing follows the professional practice - and not vice versa. There is no licensing for a "new" profession. Only when many practitioners are in practice for many years and become organized and politically active - can they can press for licensing.  Many people maintain that any licensing is a liability rather than a blessing. You have the state breathing down your back, you are restricted in many ways and you have numerous official obligations. However, as a consultant - you are an expert renting out your time and talents, free of most burdens. Our graduates will be professional health consultants, healthologists and lifestyle enhancement counselors. None of these titles require licensing. In addition, you do have the option of getting a bonafide degree through Westbrook University.  The Institute of Holistic Studies is an adult Learning Center, open to anyone who has a desire to learn, anywhere from a single course to a full professional program. We are "people" oriented. We offer you the greatest opportunity to get out of the victim role and become a cause in your life.

Remember: Knowledge and intention are the most powerful tools you can wield!

AN OPEN LETER:

Dear Health-Conscious Friends;

Expand your horizons through the seminars and workshops that we offer by learning about your body, its nutritional requirements, how to enhance your lifestyle, how to facilitate stress reduction for yourself and your family and how to use spiritual healing methods to create balance in your life. The class tuition is very modest... the rewards are great! You are about to embark upon the most exciting undertaking of your life; the path to becoming a Healer and Holistic health-care professional is now open to you. As the Chinese proverb tells us:

"Even the longest journey starts with the first step." All our classes - including our Open House and Introduction - are made available on videocassettes, so that you may participate with us in this great adventure of "Expanding Horizons" - no matter when you join our ranks and no matter where you live on planet Earth (as long as a video-player is available to you). Ours is the only school that gives you such a fantastic opportunity.

There are vast differences among the various Holistic study programs that are available: On the one extreme are the strict full-time naturopathic colleges that are eager to emulate the medical schools, at the other extreme are the "Diploma Mills" that issue impressive certificates on beautiful paper - but little else, and in the middle are the correspondence programs that offer reading material but no personal hands-on training. This is where we fill the gap. We offer the unique synthesis of modest tuition, easy schedules, open-book exams, clinical experience, great courses, essence (energy) orientation, a library of articles, audio tapes and videos, a wonderful extra-curricular enrichment program and options for clinical internship. All our courses are also available on video, as part of our DISTANCE LEARNING program (same tuition, even though it involves a lot more work and expenses on our part).

Students have 3 educational options:
A. Taking isolated courses as they come up (no exam requirements, no pre- requisites other than the one-evening Fundamentals course and no certificates). This option is suitable for the purpose of deepening understanding of health, disease and healing, gaining insights into current issues, avoiding costly medical errors and learning to treat oneself and one's family through natural, effective, non-invasive techniques.

B. Taking a Certification Program in one or more of the sub-specialties (such as Nutrition, Hypnotherapy, Reflexology, Herbology, Homeopathy. Kinesiology, Lymphology, Healing). Pre-requisites are: Fundamentals and the Preliminary program.

C. Taking the full professional program leading to the N.D. degree (Doctor of Naturopathy) or an academic degree (Ph.D.) through Westbrook University, with which we are affiliated. This is a 4 year program, with possibility of acceleration to complete it in 2 or 3 years.

Since all classes are videotaped, if you must miss a class for whatever reason, you will have the option of making it up... or if you live too far to attend in person, you'll be able to register for video-mediated "distance learning". Whether attending in person or through the screen - you will get the personal caring of our staff, each of whom is committed to optimizing your learning experience... The larger the class, the more options we can offer you (such as extra for-credit workshops on Sundays, discounts on pre-arranged seminars delivered by other institutions, etc.) So you would benefit greatly by recommending that your friends join our ranks.

One of the greatest features of our program is its on-going availability: you can join at any time and get all the classes that you missed on videocassettes, including all the printed handouts - so you will not miss anything! Fundamentals class is a pre-requisite for ALL further study. Following that is the "Preliminary Program", starting with the five-week course in Holistic Medicine. If you order these now and you live within riding-range of NYC, you can still join us in the next course in person (Tues. evenings). Free on-the-street parking is available, as well as three parking garages nearby. A vegetarian health restaurant is located right in the building.  If you live too far to attend, you may register as a Distance student, still enjoy all that is covered in class and see the "hands-on" in living color and full detail on your screen.
IF YOU HAVE THE YEARNING - YOU CAN DO THE LEARNING!

The following topics are covered in the Fundamentals:

1.   Treating colds and flu Holistically
2.   Status of Alternative Medicine
3.   A paradigm shift (Allopathy vs Holism)
4.   Stimulating the immune system
5.   Answering digestive challenges
6.   An anatomical model
7.   Healing in your hands
8.   Psychological & spiritual anchors
9.   Earn-while-you-learn opportunities
10. Questions & Answers

The sessions are very exciting, with actual demonstrations and "worshipping". As soon as you "catch up", you may present your questions in class. Until then, you will learn a lot from the questions of others, and you may approach the lecturer during the break.

The following is our preliminary curriculum (a pre-requisite to all further study); or it may be taken separately (for fun, or as a self-test of your personal inclination) without the obligation to continue.

    WHAT NEXT?

The advanced program is designed for students who have completed the preliminary courses and wish to pursue a career as health-care practitioners. Acceptance to this program requires a personal interview and submission of all academic records and health-related courses taken. This professional curriculum requires four years of study (or two years on the accelerated plan), consisting of 760 mandatory academic hours, 140 elective hours ("enrichment program"), field work, clinical internship, seven academic research projects and approximately 1200 hours of required reading (total 3000 study hours); all tests are "open-book" tests and must be passed satisfactorily. Our whole program is accepted by Westbrook University toward the N.D. degree and/or an academic degree (B.A., M.A., Ph.D.). Students' academic credentials will be evaluated by the university on an individual basis; if short on anything - a completion will be recommended.
Part-time students (who are studying for their own satisfaction, without certification) may take any segment of the program - or even an isolated course (as long as the pre-requisite is met), for the purpose of deepening their personal knowledge - and are exempt from examinations and research projects. Aspiring students who live far away are accepted for our Home Study division and will get the full study material (or the courses of their choice) on video and printed material; they will be responsible for the contents just as are all other students, and may take their examination by correspondence. If they are working toward certification, they will be required to attend (as all full-time students are) the Four-day Intensive in person, prior to graduation. Interim certifications (in Reflexology, Healing, Nutrition, Internal Hygiene and other therapeutic modalities) will be available to students who complete the respective required block of courses satisfactorily. This will provide clinical skills that may be completed in a relatively short time, so that a practice can be started while still in school. Sessions are held in Manhattan one evening a week (6:30 to 9:40 p.m.) - twice a week on the accelerated program . Learning should be an exciting adventure... a lifelong challenge... a pleasant experience - therefore we place high value on quality of teaching. In addition to the regular staff, various guest lecturers will contribute their expertise. Full-time students will get official student cards and will be invited to post- graduate seminars given by the International Academy of Health Sciences at a discount; this will enable them to learn high-level skills faster and to accumulate "elective" credits, as well.
Studies include: Nutrition,. Naturopathy (=natural therapy), Anatomy and Therapeutic Physiology, Reflexology, Chemistry, Nutrition, Iridology, Oriental Medicine, Pathology, Kinesiology, Stress reduction, Homeopathy, Lymphology and Detoxification strategies, Healing techniques, Holistic Psychotherapy, Herbology, Internal Hygiene, Practicum and Special Topics (as electives). This experience will be the highlight of your academic program, to be warmly remembered for the rest of your life.
